After WGT ...

Fri May 16, 2008, 9:35 AM
  • Mood: Content
  • Listening to: Matt Howden - again ;)
  • Drinking: Wine - hopefully later ...
This year's WGT was wonderful, and exhausting - as usual.
We started on thursday, the 8. 5. at about 11. a.m. and so I arrived at my accommondation at 1:30 p.m, it's not too far to drive from here.

I stayed at a university student's appartment, together with two other women, I already knew one from my favourite forum but saw her the first time.
Our host has two cats as well and they literally loved my hoop skirts ;) ... well, cats ;)

In the evening we went to the Agra to get our wristbands already and then had a glass of wine in the city centre before we got to sleep, there already were parties on that day but the following ones should be exhausting enough.

On friday, we first went to a victorian picknick that was organised by Viona. It was great, the meadow in front of the Parkschlösschen was filled with people wearing wonderful gowns. I could talk to a few people I only knew from the internet as well, but I wish I had the time to talk to some more , nevertheless it was the perfect start for WGT 2008. Viona took a lot of pictures and we changed a few words, I'm already looking forward to her pictures but I guess it will take a little time until she puts them up, I'm sure she must have made a million pictures ;)

Later there should be some kind of court ball with historic dances at the Parkschloß but they started a lot later than we expected. Nevertheless it was great, that ball was announced quite short before WGT but I was very curious about it. Funny enough they taught the people mainly english country dances (or Playford dances, if anyone of you knows that name ...) just like I've expected, because most Playford dances are quite simple and are a lot of fun. I nearly died as I realised that I've learned many of those dances already at our historic dancing group, but first I had no one to dance with .. we just had not enough gentlemen ...
Luckily I found someone to dance with later.

After that ball the first neo-romantic party took place at the same location. Just like the historic ball those parties were announced very late but it made me extremely happy. I already was angry because of the bad program that year but those parties and the ball just saved my WGT.
Funny enough, the first party was made by Tom Manegold, the guy who is responsible for the music at my favourite club here, and therefore he is responsible for the famous Göttertanz as well. Like I expected he made a gorgeous party, I could have stayed on the dancefloor all night.. if I didn't have to rest from time to time and have a drink ... OK, in some ways it's a little funny to drive to Leipzig to go to a Göttertanz, but it was great, Tom had a good evening and only played gorgeous music that night.

I wore my "Robe a la Gothique" that day and I managed to damage my pocket hoops because of excessive dancing .. the first steel bone decided to flee right at the court ball, I managed to put it away before the next dance, but on the other day I realised that another bone was missing ... well, seems like I have to repair some things now ...

We arrived at our accommodation later as we expected that night, and I think it would have been wiser not to have another glass of wine at the end ...

On Saturday we first went to Schillerpark right at the city centre because I wanted to meet some people from another forum. There were lots of photographers and I guess I've spent half of the time looking into camera lenses. Later I found a picture of me at the homepage of a well known magazine in Germany, called the "Spiegel" .. well,, why not, I was wearing my red baroque gown that day and really was proud of my perfectly white skin, I don't think you could see any centimetre of my natural face colour *arrogant grin* :D
At first I feared that it would be too warm for tons of cotton velvet, but luckily it was OK, I guess because I only used natural fibres for that gown, there's not a little bit polyester used and so it was good to wear even at temperatures where the girls prefered extremely short skirts ;)
After the meeting we stayed a little bit at the Moritzbastei to get something to eat and drink and afterwards we spent the remaining time until the first of two (!) concerts I wanted to see started with visiting a few fabric stores *cough* .. OK, we didn't buy anything but I saw a few quite nice fabrics and immediately devellopped new ideas .. typically me ;) .
At 8:00 p.m the concert at Schauspielhaus started. It was great, the band is called Collection D'Arnell Andrea from France who where one of the first at the middle of the 1980's who made so called ethereal music (in Germany that genre is called "Heavenly Voices" because of the mostly classical trained singers and the quite - well -- ethereal style of music .. I don't know why replace an english name with another, but "Heavenly Voices" just hits the spot) .
As a proof that extreme sewing can cause brain damage, I found myself sitting at the Schauspielhaus just a few minutes before the concert started, staring at the really huge red velvet curtain that still was hiding the stage, thinking about what great gowns I could make out of such an amount of fabric ... luckily the curtain really was much too big to steal it :D
After the concert we returned to Agra again and first wanted to visit the second neo-romantic party but we got tired and I started to feel a little bad, so we returned to our accommodation a little earlier that evening.

On sunday I had a few problems getting up and I felt not very good, luckily it got some better after we arrived at Agra (the train was extremely jammed, what I can't stand as well .. ) and got something to drink.
We spent a lot of time at the Agra because there were again lots of photographers and it took hours to get through, but OK, if I would not prefer my kind of styling, I wouldn't have had those "problems" ... I think I can live with being photographed that often *arrogant grin again* :D ... at least I have to say that it feels good getting a little attention after having a quite bad time the months before so I hope you don't really think that I am that arrogant in real ;) ...

At first we planned to visit the Südfriedhof before the second concert we wanted to see, because it is said to be one of the most beautiful cemetaries in Germany, but we just had no time .. sadly, :iconlumia-vita: took her camera with her and we wanted to make a shooting at WGT .. well, perhaps next year ..
But we met Viona once again who made some pictures of everyone of our group that day.

The concert of "Sieben" (Matt Howden) took place at the crypt of Völkerschlachtdenkmal, which is an extremely impressive location, and together with Matt Howdens incredible music it was an extraordinary experience.
The concert surely was one of THE highlights at this year's WGT, and sadly it was over much too soon ..
Imagine a guy who stands alone on the stage (OK, there wasn't a stage but ... well ;) ) only with his violin and a set of loop pedals and who starts to make the song's rythm with his fingers on the violin's body, and then plays that sequence over and over again while he adds more and more sound layers and the result is an overwhelming piece of music ... if you don't know Matt Howden so far, I can really recommend his gorgeous music. He surely is a true artist.

After the concert we returned to Agra for something to eat and then visited the third and last neo-romantic party which was not as great as the first one but nevertheless quite good. I've been dancing a bit and after a glass of wine we left to our accommodations.

On monday we slept really long, so we arrived at the Agra quite late. The trains were already quite empty that day, surprisingly, but I've heard before that this year must have been less people at WGT than the years before.
We spent our last money at the Agra. Originally I wanted to buy some CD's because my taste in music is too weird to go to the next shop, but I was not motivated enough to look through all that CD's, so I only bought two large crosses for decoration, a set of cat-shaped cookie-forms and new white make-up.
Later we looked at heidnisches Dorf (heathen village, some kind of medieaval market) and got something to eat there and met some friends. Later we returned to Agra and met a another bunch of friends, so we had a last drink together and talked a bit until we got back to our accommodation with a slight feeling of sadness because it was the last evening of this year's WGT.

The next day I had to spend at the city centre until afternoon because my host had to go to university and my friends who drove home wanted to meet some other friends.
There were still many black dressed people at the city centre who where waiting for their trains home and enjoing the last sunbeams at Leipzig.
I took a stroll at the shopping mall at the main train station at Leipzig and realised once again that the shops are just the same ones as here. As I made a break I talked to someone who was waiting for his train just like the many other gothics there. That's the great thing about WGT, you meet so many new people and everyone is interesting on his own way.

I spent the last hour at Moritzbastei which was so abandoned that I nearly had to cry. If you only know that place filled with black dressed people and then visit it on the day after WGT, knowing that it's over for that year it really is depressing.

But OK, next year's WGT surely will come and I'm looking forward to it, hopefully with a few more bands worth watching them and with another court ball and neo-romantic parties.

And now it's time to start sewing again and taking care of a few real-life problems. Typically me, one day after WGT I immediately had an idea for a new gown *cough* but before I'm going to start on that I better should go on with making some more everyday clothes and of course finish some other stuff.

At least I would like to draw your attention to a few friends of mine:
At first one of my photographers: :iconcarafaye:
And then my friend :iconweinglasarien: :
Another seamstress and photograper: :iconlumiavita:

Wow, that sounds fantastic. I wish I could have been there. I suppose I need to make some more gothic creations first and then find more information on where, when and how much it would all cost.
Are there many English speaking people? I know so little German, I only studied two or three hours a week at school for maybe three years so not much at all, I really don't remember. Then I never needed to use it so it's all forgotten. It's over 30 years since I spoke any German at all. :(

Interesting read, you obviously had a very good time. And congratulations with making it to (online) Spiegel. :)
:iconstahlrose:
:) yes, WGT really is something special, not only a simple "festival". It really is worth visiting it.
As far as I know there are people from almost every country and I was glad that my english is quite OK ;) so I think you should have not much problems talking in english.

For informations you can have a look on the homepage: [link]

It has a english version too :) .. the ticket is quite cheap for four days and all the stuff you can visit with it, the expensive things are accommodation and for you perhaps the flight to germany, you can stay at the camping site as well but this is almost impossible if you have more elaborate gowns ;) and I have to say that I really hate camping :D

Thanks :)

Yes, it was great, I want to go back to Leipzig *gg* now ;)

I've found the picture:

But it was Stern, not Spiegel ... doesn't matter, it turned out quite nice ;)

I think it would be cheaper for me to drive ;) (I live in France now) and if I drove I could stay in the van - though I hate camping in the van :( On the other hand I do have an enormous medieval tent that takes camping to a higher level - much easier to get dressed when you can stand up fully :D though I did manage my Victorian outfit in the back of the van [link]

Thank you for the link - I will have a look and if it's affordable start saving ;)

*gg* OK, a really big tent would be a great advantage :D
I even would prefer a van instead of ordinary camping, the last years I stayed at some friend's appartments or like this year I found my accommodation via the WGT Forum, so it was much cheaper than a hotel as well ...

Ordinary camping is quite horrible. After years of sleeping in my lovely medieval bed in my tent I can't imagine a sleeping bag on the ground or even a camp bed ;)

My tent is over 5m long by 3m wide, the walls are 1.8m high and at the top of the roof it is over 2.5m high :D plenty of room for dressing :giggle: So my tent is much nicer to camp in than the van.

Thanks! I have fond memories of Leipzig and reading your story, I can easily imagine that, with the WGT in town, it must be even more a sight to behold, and a time to shoot thousands of pictures. I think your Stern photo is indeed very nice. :)

(I trust you checked the picture when you saved it, or you might have ended up with a 1x1 px Gif... I can give you the direct link if you want.)
:iconstahlrose:
Would be great if you can give me th link, I tried myself but wasn't able to get it ...
